I would recommend Ron Adner’s book http://www.amazon.com/The-Wide-Lens-Strategy-Innovation/dp/1591844606 . It introduces frameworks for thinking through innovation in a wider ecosystem. My screw-ups have generally been based on an insufficient understanding of the concepts analyzed in the book
